In his new album, From the Soul, legendary classical bassoonist Frank Morelli unveils a transcendent journey of humanity and hope. Through works of Wynton Marsalis, Jeff Scott, Lori Laitman, Dominick Argento, and Nirmali Fenn, Frank Morelli takes the listener on a powerful journey using the bassoon as a voice of profound emotional range, delivering a soul-deep narrative that is both intimate and universal.

From the Soul has been a labor of love. The four living composers are souls that I have had the honor to know, some for decades. Special thanks to José Garcia-León, the Henry and Lucy Moses Dean of Music at Yale University, for allowing us to record in the outstanding acoustics of the Blocker Rehearsal Hall. I am forever grateful to my collaborators, pianist Wei-Yi Yang, mezzo-soprano Janna Baty and the Callisto Quartet for their tireless commitment. Once again, lead sound engineer Matthew LeFevre, assisted by the excellent Benjamin Schwartz, have outdone themselves. Thanks to producer Seunghee Lee for her guidance, wide-ranging knowledge and enthusiasm in creating this second album of mine to be released by her record label, Musica Solis. Thanks to Ruth Sommers for having the wisdom to ask Lori Laitman to create a version of her song cycle for voice and bassoon. I could not accomplish any of this without the support of my wife, Bethany Horton Morelli, nor the encouragement of our son Anthony and his wife, Victoria. And, as always, I am grateful to Stephan Leitzinger who created the beautiful bassoon that has become my true voice.
